Location: Situated east of Dunhuang City, Dunhuang Airport is in Mogao Town about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from the downtown area, and it is around 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) to Mogao Cave.
Brief Intro: Dunhuang Airport (DNH) is a small airport that only offers domestic flights. Established in 1982, Dunhuang Airport now has a 2,800-meter (about 1.73-mile) runway, a 4C flight area, five gate positions and a 12-thousand-square-meter (about 129,167 square feet) Terminal Building. Currently, it serves more than 40 flights to destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Lanzhou and Urumqi. Some of the flights would be canceled in winter. When planning your trip, passengers better get the exact information of the flights.

There is no direct bus going to Mogao Caves from Dunhuang Airport, passengers can take taxi or hire a van. It costs around CNY60 and 25 minutes to take a taxi from Dunhuang Airport to Mogao Cave.

Luggage Cart: They are successively located in the Departure and Arrival Hall. Passengers can use them for free.
Multimedia Phones: There are multimedia phones at some Entrances of Departure Hall and near every Boarding Gate of Waiting Hall. Passengers can receive and send emails and search for information on it. The IC cards are sold beside the IC phones and at the convenience store of Departure Hall.
Water Fountain: There are three kinds of water fountain offered in the terminal building: common pure water with disposable paper cups, automatic watering machines offer cold and hot water and automatic electronic heater.
Nursing Room: It is equipped with baby dressing table, sink, chairs and some simple toys. Mothers can nurse and change babies here.
Obstacle-free Facilities: There are many obstacle-free facilities in the terminal for the convenience of handicapped passengers, i.e. low counters and phones, obstacle-free washing rooms, water fountains and passage, special chairs and parking lot. Additionally, there are also blind roads, Braille, service bell and flashing lights for instruction in the building.
Passengers can also found Post Office, Smoking Room, Children's Playing Area and Changing Room in the airport terminal building.

Every year on the 6th day of the Chinese lunar 6th month, local people will go to Echoing-Sand Mountain to have sun bath. It is said that the sand there is very pure without soil and dust, so it is very effective in treating Rheumatoid Arthritis. Patients go to the mountain with silkie soup as well as millet wine at noon and stay for three hours, with sand covering up to their waist and a parasol above their head. This “treatment” will last for seven days and patients find their conditions improved.
Best Time for Visiting
May to October is the best time to visit Dunhuang if one is to avoid the crowd. It is the low season for travelers but it can be difficult to do shopping. Catching a bus is not easy either although tickets are cheap during the low season. Travelers during this period must be better prepared with sun protection products such as sun cream and hats or caps.
