Where to Shop
There has been a huge growth in retail
options in Beijing over the last few years. You have your pick of every
type of shopping experience from massive multi-floor megamalls, upscale
boutiques, quaint alleyway stores through to crowded, bustling markets
and street venders.
Districts
Within Beijing several distinct areas are renowned for their shopping opportunities.
The famous Wangfujing, located in the
city center to the east of Tiananmen Square, is probably the most famous
shopping area and attracts thousands of shoppers every day. In this
kilometer-long, pedestrianized shopping district stretching from the
Chinese Art Gallery to Dongchan’an Avenue you can find large department
stores, bookstores and many specialty stores, including those selling
clothing, specialty foods and souvenirs.
The shopping district of Qianmen Street
just south of Tiananmen Square has been restored to reflect its glory
days in the 1920s and 30s. A blend of modern brand name stores and an
eclectic mix of smaller specialty stores, the street is pedestrianized
except for trolley buses.
Nearby is Da Zhalan Street which has a concentration of discount clothing outlets and luggage stores.
Chaoyang district has a concentration of
department stores, including the upscale China World Trade Center and
Full Link Plaza where you can find high end clothing and designer names.
For a taste of old China, Liulichang
Street in Xuanwumen has a variety of stores selling a diverse range of
collectibles including: antiques, reproductions, calligraphy and jade
items.
Stores
The following are just a tiny sample of the wonderful and diverse stores Beijing has to offer:
- The Oriental Plaza (Dongfang Guangchang) is the biggest store on Wangfujing Street, offering fashions and exclusive items.
- For book-lovers, the huge Wangfujing Bookstore is close by as well as the Foreign Language Bookstore.
- Kids’ Stuff on Wangfujing has everything any child or baby could ever dream of.
Boutiques
Beijing is a great place to shop for
luxury labels. Many boutiques with designer brands are in the upscale
malls: Oriental Plaza on Dongchang’an, Shin Kong Place in the central
business district and the China World Shopping Mall on Jianguomenwai.
The famous local boutique, Mushi, with delectable silk fashion designs,
is in the Twin Towers Mall.
Tucked away in ancient hutongs
(alleyways) are more specialty boutiques. Nan Luo Gu Xiang is a
pedestrian alleyway full of funky boutiques.
Markets
Sensory overload is a danger with the
sights and sounds of Beijing’s markets. Jostling crowds, hawkers, and
huge numbers of stalls offering Panjiayuan Antique Market is a good
place to start.
