Historical Places
The city of Beijing and its surrounding area contain a magnificent collection of historic buildings,
landmarks, museums and gardens representing both its imperial past and the revolutionary era. Beijing has an impressive
concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites and historic buildings.
Visitors to Beijing will be awed by the
scale and grandeur of many of the sites. Whether walking
though the massive Tiananmen Square in the city’s center,
entering the formerly secret world of the imperial Forbidden
City, meandering along ancient and bustling alleyways, called
hutongs, admiring the engineering achievement of the Great
Wall of China, or strolling through the tranquil gardens of the
Summer Palace, visitors to Beijing are surrounded by a
wealth of historic craftsmanship and achievement.
The historic sites and landmarks are easily accessed on foot, by public transit, via taxi or
rickshaw, and there are a multitude of tours offered with English-speaking guides.
