Shandong Lawu, Green Mountains and Blue Waters

Shandong LaiwuJust to the southeast of the capitol of Shandong lies Laiwu. This famous city is blessed with great mountains like Mount Tai in the north, and soft and fertile lands in the south. With a wealth of greenery and pure-watered Xueye Lake, Laiwu has long been an area of peace and prosperity. While the political landscape of China, especially in Shandong, has morphed numerous times over the centuries, Laiwu is still deeply connected to the Qi State. When the Qi state was founded roughly 3000 years ago, the area was rife with warfare. In response, the great wall of Qi was erected to defend the people. Much of that wall and the towers used to fortify it still remain, with the best-preserved sections standing in Laiwu.
In line with Laiwu’s historic nature, the city is well known for its supply of sallow stone from the nearby mountains. These stones, which are rarity in themselves, often have fossilized remains of ancient creatures and insects. Children and adults alike flock to see these souvenirs of the past! And with a steady supply of tin in the area, a certain art developed in Laiwu long ago. Locals began to create exquisite sculptures by hand from the tin, and the delicate art has been passed down from generation to generation.
Come and see this ancient city that has thrived throughout time.
