Experience the extensive and profound Confucian culture, and discover the source of all its truth.

In Chinese culture, children use the platitudes of Confucius (“Confucius says…”) to explain every circumstance in life. However quaint, these statements are not without basis in the behavioral theory. The Doctrine of Confucius not only teaches us about ourselves,  it shows to us how to position ourselves within the communities in which we live. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is one of countless profound teachings of Confucius which still resonate today. The philosophy of Confucius has lived on for over two thousand years, and inShandong Jining, China, you have a chance to immerse yourself within this master’s life.
Confucius hometownYou will visit “San Kong”, the name given collectively to the three main sites of Confucius: the Kong Family Mansion, the Temple of Confucius, and the Cemetery of Confucius. The Kong Family Mansion consists of 300 rooms. In China, one room signifies one beam in the ceiling, so a large room with three ceiling beams is counted as three rooms. As you walk through the Kong Mansion, take the opportunity to read from Confucius’ teachings and reflect for a moment in each of the four courtyards. Study the philosophy from the handwritten calligraphy produced by Chinese emperors showcased at the Confucius Estate.
In China, the color yellow signifies imperial power, meaning that only emperors may use yellow tiles in the construction of their homes. However, the Kong Family Mansion is an exception to the rule. As well as being yellow, the tiles in all the buildings are decorated with seven circles, which symbolizes the power of Heaven represented by the emperor. These buildings are the only ones featuring these special tiles besides the Palace Museum in Bejing.
Every year on September 28th, which is the anniversary of Confucius’ birthday, a grand ceremony is held at Confucius Temple to memorialize the Great Teacher. Note that Confucius preferred to be called a teacher, which is why teacher is a very respectful title for the Chinese people. If you are not sure how to address a stranger, addressing  him or her as “teacher” is a safe and deferential option.
Suggested Routes:
If you are in a rush, you can visit all three Kongs in one day, as they are near enough to each other to be reached on foot. However, for those who would like to take time to reflect on Confucius’ life and teachings, we suggest the four day tour of the Confucius Culture.
